Partial replacement of fine aggregate with sawdust in concrete CHAPTER-1 INTRODUCTION 1. 1 General The rising growth of population and economy in India is leading to industrialization .The urbanization is leading to various kinds of researches in the engineering fields over recent years. The field that has been prone to better and more efficient changes is undoubtedly, the construction industry. With technological developments sky-rocketing, the traditional methods are slowly replaced with better alternatives. While some of these alternatives push forward the efficiency rate, some of them ease the demand of the traditional raw materials. For instance, in frame structures, walls act as screen to maintain a room’s privacy. These walls support self-weight, and for that masonry component of low density and low strength materials can be used, which can help in reducing the dead load of the structure effective. Since most of the concrete mixture is expended in the walls, a component of the mixture can be considered to be substituted in a manner that it did not compromise the performance of the mixture Sand is traditionally used as fine aggregate in the concrete mixture The cost of building construction is increasing daily as a result of increasing in the cost of building materials such as cement, granite, fine aggregates etc. This has prevented the low income earners to have their own house. Also, the agricultural and industrial wastes pose great hazard to environment and man as a result of improper management even when these wastes are burnt, they release carbon-monoxide to atmosphere which depletes the ozone layer. If these wastes are processed, they may be suitable for construction purpose. Base on these two major points given above, there is a need to investigate the use of alternative building materials which are locally available such as sawdust, cow dung, wastes from demolished building, palm kernel shell, mining wastes etc that can be used in concrete production. Since most building construction works consists of concrete work which happens to be the most expensive aspect, therefore, reduction in cost of concrete production will reduce the cost of building construction and paves ways for low income earners to become landlords and if these wastes are used in concrete production, there will be drastically reduction in amount of carbon emission, our environment will more friendly and depletion of ozone layer will seize. The overall relevance of concrete in virtually all Civil Engineering practices and building construction cannot be overemphasized. The compressive strength value obtained were found to confirm the minimum requirement of 17 N/mm2 for light weight concrete specially when 2% cement and fine aggregate were replaced with cow dung and saw dust respectively Civil Department BITS college 2019 Page 1

Partial replacement of fine aggregate with sawdust in concrete In the saw dust replaced concrete compressive strength at 28 days falls within the characteristic strength of plain concrete. Concrete is most widely used as a construction material in day- to-day life and it also has abundantly all over today. Concrete is the best material of choice of where strength, durability, ductility, tensile and absorption resistance are required. In order to minimize the cost of the construction material in day-to-day life and to utilize the natural source materials such as saw dust, rice husk, egg shell, coir are used. Saw dust is the waste product which is available huge in quantity and which can be used as substitute of fine aggregate. In the last decade, construction industry has been conducting research on the utilization of waste product in concrete. Each waste product has its own specific effect on properties of fresh and hardened concrete. Conservation of natural resources and presentation of environment is the essence of any development. The problem arising from continuous technological and industrial development is the disposal of waste material. If some of the waste material are found suitable in concrete making not only cost of construction can be cut down and also safe disposal of waste material can be achieved .The use of waste product in concrete not only makes it economical but also solves some of the disposal problems 1.1 Specific Introduction Concrete is an artificial material in which the aggregates both fine and coarse are bonded together by the cement when mixed with water. The concrete has become so popular and indispensable because of its inherent, concrete brought a revolution in applications of concrete. Concrete has unlimited opportunities for innovative applications, design and construction techniques. Its great versatility and relative economy in filling wide range of needs has made it is very competitive building material Saw dust (or wood dust in industrial terms) is a by-product or waste produced in work working operations. These may include sawing, milling, routing, drilling and sanding. It consists of fine wood particles and shows properties of moisture holding which properties can be helped to use this sawdust concrete as a self-curing concrete. It has been proven that in a concrete mixture it doesn’t compromise the performance of the mixture and acts just like the traditional alternative. Concrete is the most widely used construction material all over the world .with innovations in science and technology in construction industry, the scope of concrete as a structural material has widened. Concrete is strong compression but it is weak in tension and flexure, The utilization of concrete is increasing at a higher rate due to development in infrastructure and construction activities all around the world. River sand has been the most popular choice for the fine aggregate component of concrete in the past, but over use of the material has led to environmental concerns, Attempts have also been made to reduce the cost of the total Attempts Civil Department BITS college 2019 Page 2

Generation of wood wastes. Thus, this research investigates the potential use of wood sawdust wastes to produce a low-cost and lightweight composite for construction and engineering purpose 1.3 Objectives of the study  To prepare light weight saw dust concrete of nearly equal advantages like conventional concrete.  To prepare economical concrete.  Good disposal of waste (Saw dust).  To find the strength of saw dust replaced concrete.  To identify the optimum usage of saw dust in concrete.  M25 Grade of concrete is chosen for the following investigation  Use of sawdust by sand replacement in normal concrete for real time projects thereby reducing the overall cost of construction. Partial replacement of fine aggregate with sawdust in concrete CHAPTER- 2 LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 Introduction The expenditure on traditional materials used in construction is continued to increase as the major percentage of the population continues to fall below the poverty line. Hence, several research persons are working on to use alternative materials in place of normal traditional materials to bring down the expenditure to be spent on building materials by using material, which is available in surroundings in construction works. Now a day’s ecologists are facing a big problem of disposing waste substance produced due to the cyclic production of wastes from various companies and agriculture. One of the solutions found by research persons is to use the waste substances as a material used to fill in concrete production, by which both ecologist and structural engineer gets a solution in disposal of waste and increase of the performance of concrete to meet the structural needs . By using waste materials possessing pozzolanic characteristics gives as a advantageous step made by the research persons as it develops more strength and reduces the use of cement as we replaces it with substances having pozzolanic activities by which we can reduce the investment on structures and gets economical benefits and ecological advantage by reducing the disposal problem. Joy et al. [1] they checked the 28 days compressive strength, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength at various mix proportions. They cast specified number of cubes, cylinder and beams by replacing fine aggregate with sawdust by 15%, 20%, 25% & 30% and to compare their property with standard mix (M25).Based on the investigation on sawdust, following conclusions were made i.e. in 28 days compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of the concrete is not increased to large extent but it almost matches with the compressive and splitting tensile strength of nominal mix concrete. The compressive strength obtained for the replacement of fine aggregate with 25% sawdust was proved to be the optimum mix to get M25 grade of concrete. But the flexural strength gradually increases as sawdust content increases. The fiber content in sawdust is very high and is responsible for the increase of strength. Weight of the sawdust concrete was reduced as compared with normal concrete and also become more economical. As a result of this experiment it was observed that the concrete containing sawdust get compacted more efficiently than the normal concrete. Dry porous sawdust could absorb sufficient amount of water that could be an effective mean of internal curing and absorb the excess water in the mix and provide the water required for the hydration of the cement.
