Electronic Measurements & Instrumentation [EMI] Course Objectives This course provides: 1. An introduction to measurement techniques and instrumentation design and operation. 2. The basic concepts of units, measurement error and accuracy, the construction and design of measuring devices and circuits, measuring instruments and their proper applications. 3. To use different measuring techniques and the measurement of different physical parameters using different Transducers. Course Outcomes 1. Describe the fundamental concepts and principles of instrumentation. 2. Explain the operation of the various instruments required in measurement. 3. Apply the measurement techniques for different types of tests. 4. To select specific instrument for specific instrument function. 5. Understand the principle of operation, working of different electronic instruments like, Digital Multi meter, Voltmeter. 6. Learners will apply knowledge of different oscilloscopes like, CRO, DSO. 7. Explain the operation of the various instruments required in measurement. 3. Electronic Measurements & Instrumentation [EMI] Unit-I Basics of Measurements : 1) The measurement of a given parameter or quality is the act or result of a quantities comparison between a predefined standard and an unknown quantity to be Measured. 2) The major problem with any measuring instrument is ERROR. 3) The measuring instrument may be defined as a device for determining the Value or Magnitude of a Quantity or Variable. 4) An electronic instrument is the one which is based on Electric or Electrical principles for its measurement functions. The measurement of any Electronic or Electrical quantity or variable is termed as an Electric Measurement. 5) For any measurement, a well-defined set of Standards and Calibration Units is essential. 6) The Physical, Chemical, Electrical Quantity, Property Process, Variable or a Condition to be measured is referred as “ Measurand” 7) The various Physical Measurands are Pressure, Level Force, Strain, Velocity etc., 8) While the Electrical Measurands are Voltage, Current, Power and Frequency. Fundamental Elements of an Instrument : The Elements present are a. Primary Sensing Element. b. Data Conditioning Element. c. Data Presentation Element.
