UNIT - 1 (HUMAN VALUES) ETHICS  Ethics is derived from Greek word ‘ETHOS’ means character which refers to the philosophical science that deals with the rightness and wrongness of human action.  It concerned with what is good and right for society.  It is a set of principles (or) standards of human behaviors. By using these ethical standards, a person (or) group of persons can regulates to distinguish what is right and what is wrong. MORALS Morals are standards, norms and principles of right and wrong. These morals help to guide our behavior and accept behavior of others. MORALITY It is concerned with principles and practices of morals. a) What ought (or) ought not to be done in a given situation. b) What is right and wrong about handling the situation. c) What is good and bad about the people polices and ideas involved. DISTINGUISH BETWEEN MORALITY AND ETHICS Si.No. Morality 1 It is based on traditions, more general & perspective. 2 More concerned with results of wrong action 3 Thrust is on judgment and punishment is in the name of god or by laws. 4 It is in top priority, because damage is more common. 5 Eg: character flaw, corruption, crime, etc. Ethics It is critical reflections of morals of specific and descriptive. More concerned with results of right action. Thrust is based on influence, education, training through codes, guidelines & corrections. It is in second priority, because less serious & less common. Eg: beliefs about manners, tasks, customs & laws. VALUES 1. Definition: They are set of principles or standards of behavior that are important and considered as high esteem by society based on morals, norms and standards. They are guidelines for our success. 2. Importance of Values:  Guide to live ethically & to take right decision.  Helps to evaluate us & judge others action.  It improves attitude which leads to be a successful life.  Good values help us to feel peace. 3. Types of Values (or) 5 Core Human Values:  Right Conduct  Peace  Truth  Love  Non-violence a) Right Conduct: It is based on three skills. Ethical Skills – code of conduct, courage, dependability, duty, efficiency, ingenuity, initiative, perseverance, punctuality, resourcefulness, respect to all and responsibility. b) Peace: It includes calmness, concentration, discipline, dignity, equality, faithfulness, focus, happiness, self confidence, self acceptance, self control, self esteem, self respect, tolerance and understanding c) Truth: It includes accuracy, honesty, justice, purity, knowledge, self analysis, sincerity, trust, truthfulness and determination. d) Love: It includes acceptance, affection, care, dedication, forgiveness, friendship, gentleness, kindness and sharing. e) Non-Violence: It can be classified as psychological and social. Psychological Non-Violence: concern for others, consideration, forgiveness, happiness, loyalty and morality. Social Non-Violence: appreciation of other culture & religion, brotherhood, care of environment. WORK ETHICS 1. Definition:  It is defined as a set of attitudes concerning with values of work which forms the motivational orientation  It aims to ensure, a) Economy b) Productivity c) Safety d) Health & Hygiene e) Privacy f) Culture & Social development h) Welfare i) Environment 2. Many Complex Problems Exist in Work Ethics (Industrial & Business) Scenario:  People should be recognized as individuals & treated with dignity as living human beings.  Economic independence.  Privacy (or) personnel freedom of an employee is to be protected. At the same time, confidentiality of an employee is also to be protected.  Life security during job upon retirement.  The quality of work life has to be improved by hardwork. The hardwork & productivity are very essential to lead a successful industry.  Employee alteration in case of absence is essential.  A different view of work ethics – Work is considered as a necessary evil. It must do in a order to avoid worse evil such as dependency & poverty.  Work is not a namely consideration – Human believes that, it is good to work. Work is good for body & mind. It promotes self respect & self esteem. It also gives a moral & meaningful foundation for life.  By work ethics, it is come to conclude that work improves the quality of life and makes the life purposeful, meaningful & happy. SERVICE LEARNING 1. Definition:  it is teaching & learning approach that integrates academic study to enrich learning, teaching and strengthen the communities.  It is important for students because it helps them to feel like an active part of the education process instead of being just information. 2. Characteristics of Service Learning:  It promotes strong circular connection & high opportunities.  Project meetings help them to clear educational goals in order to engage the development of challenges. Service Learning Climate:  Safety  Encourage risk taking  Stimulate  Collaborative  Highly challenging  Low threat 6. Results of Service Learning:  More socially competent.  Increase in both personnel & social responsibility.  Accept cultural diversity.  Develops a comfortable feeling while helping others.  Give ample opportunity to put their voice. CIVIC VIRTUE 1. Definition:  Civic comes from Latin word ‘CIVITAS’ which means civilized (or) living in a city & now thing the word citizen.  Virtue comes from the word Latin ‘VIRTUS’ which means being moral (or) good.  Hence civic virtue is the behavior of good citizen. 2. Description:  It includes, a) Obeying rules & laws b) Perseverance c) Compassion d) Serving e) Voting & so on  It describes about giving back to your community and society what they had already given you.  According to “John .F. Kennedy”, not ask what your country can do for you, instead of that put your voice what you can do for your country.  Also he put infront the following questions for civic virtue, a) What can you do for your family? b) What can you do for your country? c) What can you do for your community? d) What can you do for your school? 3.
